The Department of Oceanography of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology(SUST), Bangladesh, will host the 2023 NF-POGO Regional Training Programme on Sustainable Marine Resource Management.
This Nippon Foundation (NF) and Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) capacity development initiative will consist of an intensive training course aimed at early scientists, technicians, postgraduate students (PhD or MSc) and post-doctoral researchers involved in relevant fields of marine resource management from South and Southeast Asian
countries.
The 12-day training will include lectures, practicals and a field trip focusing on:
- Fisheries resource management
- Marine spatial planning and conservation
- Climate change and marine resources
- Remote Sensing for resource management
- Data science in marine resource management
The training will be followed by the International Symposium on Marine Resource Management, which will be organized by Department of Oceanography, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, on 24th and 25th March 2023. Training participants are expected to attend the Symposium.
Who can apply
This training programme is open to early career scientists, technicians, postgraduate students (PhD or MSc) and post-doctoral involved in relevant fields of marine resource management from South and Southeast Asian countries.
A limited number of travel grants will be available for participants from developing countries and countries with economies in transition from the region (see list of eligible countries here).
The grants WILL cover international travel, accommodation, and meals. The grants WILL NOT cover expenses incurred by the fellow in their own nation (e.g., domestic travel, visa costs, personal insurance, COVID test)
Venue
The 2023 NF-POGO Regional Training Programme on Sustainable Marine Resource Management will be held in Sylhet (Shahjalal University of Science and Technology campus and at the Grand Sylhet Hotel and Resort), with a field trip to Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

The recommendation letter should be dated, written in English and on institutional letterhead.
Only applications that are complete in ALL respects will be considered for the fellowship. The Selection Committee will consider the following points:
- Quality of the application;
- Curriculum of the applicant;
- Evidence that the training will lead to capacity development with potential lasting impact on regional observations.
The deadline to submit the application is extended until 31st December 2022.
